Jerusalem Day

The 25th of Iyar 5727 is “Jerusalem Day”

Naot Mordechai, Iyar 5727, 1967

There is still no name for this war. The name that this war will be called in history and by the people, needs to comprise all its significance, and it shall be determined also in the light of the political developments in the future and pursuant to the fate of the fruit of victory. However, there is no doubt that the 25th Iyar 5727, June 7th 1967, is “Jerusalem Day”. The anonymous poet who wrote Psalm 137 said: “Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell” and added: “If I forget thee oh Jerusalem, may my hand lose its skill” – the one who started to weave the stable thread, of 2553 years, led us from the first destruction of the city and until this present day. No, it is not a day of vengeance and payment, this is not what we desired. The radar, Nebi Samuel, Latrun, Sheikh Jerach, the Old City and Gush Etzion – their taking was a debt, owed to our generation of sons, the sons of the generation of our fathers of today, who gave their lives for them – and did not succeed in becoming fathers. At this time we bless their memories, and we fulfil the bequests of millions of Jews of all the generations.
