Shavuot

A. Shlonsky

The Shavuot Festival

I can see Eshkol, man of Degania, passing through the ripe grain, and the stalks telling him:

Levi, Levi!

And he knows they mean him, so he turns his head and says:
Hello wheat sheaves!
We had a double symbol of sword and sheaves of wheat; of the sword we always said:
Let’s hope we never need it!
And for the sheaves we prayed...
I like leaders who are saddened by the necessity of the sword, but gladdened by the sheaves.
