The Rabbi of Kotzk asked a young man who possessed self-confidence: “Do you know how to study?”

“Yes”, he replied.

“Do you know”, the Rabbi added, “the meaning of the word Torah?”

The young man fell silent.

“The word Torah”, said Rabbi Mendel, “means: teachers. A person is taught, instructed. But you think that you yourself can learn; if so, you have not been taught anything yet.”
