Shavuot

Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik

Each Person Gives and Takes

G-d gave man two powers. On the one hand, the power to be the creator of worlds – the power to be a rabbi and a teacher and teach one’s fellow man; to influence him, change his personality and recreate him. On the other hand, G-d give man a different power – the power to be a student, and learn from one’s fellow man. No person, not even the greatest of men, should forget that he too can learn from others, just as he has the ability to give to others.

And even the meekest of men has emotional strength, virtues and depth of feeling that he can share with others and influence them. Every person, rabbi and student alike, has influence and is influenced, receives and gives.
