Roofs of buildings and chiselled stone

And in the streets the soft tranquillity is hidden

And fresh gusts, the treetops are quivering

And laughter in the courtyards, between the washing lines

It has one hundred gates: surrounded by olive trees

In the alleyways there is no old age

The songs are playing, over the Temple Mount

On the way down to the Monastery of the Cross

And the voice of the muezzin is calling from the spire

From the churches the bells peal in response

And a small youth with his phylacteries prays

And the tunes merge above the forest
